Spring Nails

I am getting ready to put away the dark hues of Fall and Winter, and bust out the pastels of Spring and Summer. It is a hard transition for me because naturally I gravitate towards the rich creamy dark shades (like my favourite shade: OPI's Mrs. O'Leary's BBQ) but recently I have been loving nude shades and bright colours. Here's what I'm wearing this week.

Feel free to paint your nails a different colour, and add the Nude Graffiti on something that will make it pop. I really like how it looks on the Lacey Lilac.

At Home Shellac Manicure

Last year I bought the Sally Hansen Gel Polish Starter Kit, and according to their website this is what the kit has to offer.
"Professional salon results at home have never been so easy. Saving you time and money. Up to 10 salon gel manicures at home up to 2 week wear.· Salon tested· Safe· No dry time · nails feel protected· Easy removal. The LED lamp will cure (set) your manicure to a solid, high-gloss finish with zero dry time · Starter Kit contains all you need:· 1 LED Lamp· 1 Gel Base Coat· 1 Gel Nail Color· 1 Gel Top Coat· 10 Nail Cleanser Pads· Acetone Remover· Cuticle Stick· File & Buffer· Instruction sheet"

At first I was not really happy with the kit, mainly because the manicure did not last the two weeks as promised (not like how long it lasts when you get them done in a salon). But after many months of trying different brands of the gel colour and different application techniques I think I am starting to really love this kit!

The LED Lamp is easy to use because it has a set timer that lights up for 30 seconds. This is the recommended time for you to cure your nails, but I would suggest going for at least 60 seconds. (Some colours might need 2 minutes). The cleanser pads and acetone remover that comes in the kit can be easily purchased from other brands as well, so don't feel like you can only use what's provided. The cleanser pads are just rubbing alcohol anywas.

Anyways, here is a really quick video on how I apply the Shellac on my nails.

My Summer Makeup Essentials

During the summer months it is important that I change some of the makeup I use in my routine. I don't wear the same clothes all year long, so why would I wear the same makeup? I find that my skin generally looks better during the summer months, so I opt for a lighter foundation while still maintaining a hydrating skincare regime. Since I have sensitive and oily skin, I have to use different types of products to give me the best results. Here are some of the products I swear by in the heat.

Avene Skin Recovery Cream

The first thing I do is to make sure that my skin is happy. I notice that my skin goes through cycles of reacting to everything, and I need something to help calm it down. This moisturizer from Avene is the only thing that helps to sooth my skin. It's light, hydrating and perfect for anyone with sensitive skin.  So anytime my skin flares up, I apply this and withing 24hrs my skin goes back to normal.

Caudalie Grape Water

I used MAC's Fix Plus for many years, but recently I discovered this amazing alternative. Even though I have oily skin, sometimes the products I use to combat my oil leaves my skin feeling really dry. So this hydrating spray gives my skin the hydration it needs, and my skin just soaks it up! I apply this product before my moisturizer, after I apply my foundation and generally whenever I feel I need a little extra hydration.

Philosophy's Total Matteness

This product right here is now a staple in my makeup routine. I apply it right after my moisturizer, but before a primer. It leaves my skin feeling more matte throughout the day and when I pair it up with my Nars foundation (mentioned below) my skin looks flawless. For anyone with oily or combination skin, I would highly recommend trying this under your primer! It's amazing.

Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfection

This just might be my ultimate "holy-grail" primer. I have tried so many primers in the past, because I was on the hunt for the best one for my skin, and thankfully I finally found it. I take a small amount, rub it into my fingers and dab it on to my skin. I usually keep it in my T-Zone because that is where I need the most help when it comes to oil. I give it a few minutes to set in and then apply my foundation of choice.

Nars Sheer Matte Foundation

Recently I purchased this foundation hoping that it would be amazing (especially for what I paid for it ...) and it did not disappoint. First, I love how it feels on my skin when I wear it, mainly because I do not feel like I have any foundation on. Second, since it is a matte foundation, I notice that it helps keep my oil in check; and I only have to touch up with powder maybe once. Third, a little goes a long way. I dab a few drops around the center of my face and I blend out towards my hairline and jawline.

Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade

All hail the best eye brow line on the market! I have tried many different eyebrow products, but I find that this is the only one that lasts through the hot and humid summer days. It takes several minutes to set it, and once it dries, it stays in place. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a long lasting brow product!

Random Makeup Tag Question

 10 Makeup Questions

I thought it would be fun to answer some random questions regarding makeup/beauty products, skincare and random beauty related things. I'm hoping that this will get me to re-evaluate what products I use, so I can try some new things! So here we go ....
1- How many times do you wash your face?
Usually twice a day. It is rare that I would wash it more, but sometimes I feel the need to wash my face midday. ( Depending on how bad/oily I feel my skin looks)

2- What is your current facial wash?

Currently, I use Philosophy's Purity.
I really like it, but it is nothing special. Once I finish the bottle, I am going to try something else.

It leaves my skin feeling really soft, and it's gentle too! I love that my skin did not breakout from this.

3- What foundation do you use?
Currently I use the Nars Sheer Matte foundation. I really like it because it is light on my skin but it still leaves my skin feeling matte. I have really oily skin and I have a hard time finding the right type of liquid foundation. I was using Makeup Forever's Mat Velvet, and that is great, but I just found it to be a little too heavy.(I like that one for the Winter months)

4- What make-up tools do you use in your make-up application?

I use brushes mainly, but I also love using the Beauty Blender. It is somewhat annoying that I have to use it wet, but when I feel my foundation is dry or really heavy, this baby is wonderful at making it go on my skin in a sheer way.

5- Do you use pencil or liquid eye-liner?

Both actually. However, I feel that using pencil liners is more "everyday-friendly".
6- What is your favourite blush?
I have three that I love: MAC's Coppertone, Melba and Sincere ( all of which are in the coral/orange/bronze family)
7- What is the worst make-up crime?
Poorly done eyebrows. Almost every woman, unless you are Brooke Shields, fills in her eyebrows. However, the worst thing any girl can do is mess up the shape of her brow by over-drawing them. (And in some cases, just messing up the shape all together). Eyebrows really do shape your face, so it is one of the most important things to get right.

8- Which celebrity always has great make-up?

There are a few women that I admire when it comes to their makeup... and let's be honest, we have to give credit to their makeup artists. Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively and Adele all have their makeup on point!

9- If you could leave the house with just ONE Make-up item, what would you use?
A really good eyebrow pencil!

10- Could you ever leave the house without any make-up on?

Of course. I used to think that I could never... OMG THE HORROR... but I've learned that the best feeling in the world is not having any makeup on my face. I don't do it often, because I like to look polished but I am confident enough to leave my house without any makeup on...sometimes.

My 5 Fave MAC Lipsticks

It was hard to pick just 5, but I went through all my lipsticks and managed to pick out the 5 that I just love the most.

 1) BLANKETY: This is the perfect nude lipstick for my olive skin. It has a pink undertone and doesn't wash me out. I can pair it with a nude, plum or brown lip liner.
 2) DIVA: Hellooooo perfect fall and winter lipstick! This deep red with a purple undertone is the only fall/winter accessory you will need.
 3) GIRL ABOUT TOWN: Hot pink lips will never go out of style, and this colour goes with just about every skin tone. Just make sure you have the right lip liner or else things can look messy.
 4) KINDA SEXY: My other favourite nude lipstick. This one has an orange undertone, so it is a warmer colour. I don't need to wear a lip liner with this, but I love using a brown lip liner to keep it neutral.

5) REBEL: Every woman needs this colour. Like the name suggests, it instantly makes me feel rebellious. Although a little too dark for summer, it would make an awesome night out lip colour to show your bold side. Ladies, if you have green eyes, I highly recommend this.

A Purple Haze...

One of my all time favourite makeup looks is a smokey eye... and luckily there are many ways in which you can wear a smokey eye. If you are not comfortable with the dramatic look of a smokey eye, then I recommend that you start first with incorporating some purples into your makeup routine. It is an easy way to have some colour on your face without people mistaking you for a... a woman ...working... on the streets... you know what I mean ;)

So here is how I created this wearable purple smokey eye.

First Step: I applied my Two Faced Shadow Insurance eye primer all over my eyelid. I then applied MAC's Hyperviolet Paint Pot over top of the primer. ( I wanted the purple paint pot to be a good base for my purple eye shadows)

Second Step: I applied MAC's Pink Opal on to the inner half of my eyelid, and blended. Then I took MAC's Top Hat (an oldie but a goodie) and applied it to the outer half of my eyelid and blended it to mix with the Pink Opal pigment. I took MAC's Wedge eyeshadow and blended it into my crease, so I could give the edges of the purples a soft defused effect. * Blend Blend Blend*

Third Step: I took MAC's Feline Eye Pencil and applied to the top and bottom lashes, then used my ring finger and a brush to smudge it out. For the bottom lash line, I applied Top Hat on top of the black pencil. The apply some mascara! Before I applied my lashes, I took MAC's Phloof! shadow and applied it just under my brow bone as my highlight. For extra an extra highlighting effect, I took MAC's Vellum shadow ( remember that good one?) and applied it just in the inner corner of my eye. Really makes the purple stand out because Vellum was a white frost with a iridescent purple tone to it.

Fourth Step: LASHES! I applied  some dramatic Velour Lashes (I forgot the name) that I got at the IMATS last year.  To finish the look, I swept on some of MAC's Pink Swoon Blush then moved on to my lips.

Fifth Step: Finally, the perfect lip for a smokey eye... the nude lip. I took MAC's Absolutely It Lip Pencil  and filled in my lips with it, then took MAC's To the Future Lipstick and applied it on top of the liner. And to finish my lips, I applied MAC's Girl♥Boy Plushglass

And I'm done.
